In 2004-2006, heart disease remained the leading cause of death in Hancock County and was closely followed by malignant neoplasms. Both of these causes are also the leading causes of death in Ohio.
The list of the leading causes of death in Hancock County was identical to the state of Ohio with one exception: diabetes. The rates of mortality caused by each disease are lower in Hancock County than in Ohio. For diabetes, the mortality rate caused by this condition is approximately 10% lower than the state average.
By 2004-2006, the mortality rates for heart diseases, cardiovascular diseases, chronic lower respiratory diseases, nephritis/nephrosis, and septicemia decreased on average 8% (as compared to 2001-2003).
During the same period, the mortality rates for malignant neoplasms, unintentional injures, diabetes, and influenza/pneumonia increased on average 4.5%.
The rates of deaths caused by Alzheimer’s disease remained constant at 21.4-21.5%.
