In 2007, 69.3% of Hancock County residents were participants in the county’s workforce and 65.7% of those were employed.
The Labor Force participation rates for male residents were almost 10% higher than those of female residents: 88.4% versus 79.3%. Among the females, 78% had children younger than 6 years old.
By age groups, the highest rates of Labor Force participation were demonstrated by the groups of 20-24 year-olds (88.6%), 25-44 (88.2%), and 87.8%. 16-19 and 55-64 year-old residents also had relatively high rates of participation at 69.3% and 63.9% respectively. Residents older than 75 had the lowest rate of Labor Force participation at 4.6%.
There was a strong positive correlation between the degree attained and the rate of Labor Force participation among Hancock County residents. In particular, higher educational levels resulted in higher rates of participation: for example, Labor Force participation was less than 75% for high school dropouts and 88% for the residents with a bachelor’s degree.
