In 2003, suspected neglect was documented as the leading crime against children in Hancock County with 180 reported cases. Suspected sexual abuse was the second major concern with 139 cases closely followed by the cumulative number of other types of abuse (130 cases).

Out of 162 children served by the Hancock County Job and Family services in 2003, the majority were either granted a custodian through the court (57) or were placed into a family foster home (61).

The number of abuse allegations declined at ~4% in 2007 when compared to 2006. During the same period, the number of children reunified with families within 12 month grew almost 20% from 57.9% in 2006 to 74.1% in 2007. However, in both years, children reunification in Hancock County remained ~20% lower than the state rate: 76.6% in 2006 and 95.7% in 2007.
